Located in the upper reaches of the Shimizu River, a tributary of the Gion River that flows into the Kase River, is a beautiful waterfall 75 meters high and 13 meters wide. This waterfall is also known as “Tamasudare Falls,” and the clear water falls boldly down to form a vertical cliff.
It is a place of power and beauty at the same time. Near the waterfall is a monument in honor of Kiyoo Kuranaga, a samurai of the Hizen domain who was struck by the waterfall and froze to death when the 6th lord of Hizen, Lord Nabeshima Religious Affairs, became seriously ill. This monument was erected in 1787. It is said that since that time, a ceremony to purify oneself at this waterfall has been held.
The waterfall has long been famous for the belief in Kannon Bosatsu (Goddess of Mercy), and the Kiyomizu Kannon Hoho Temple, located at the entrance to the waterfall basin, is a sacred site where the ritual of receiving water from the waterfall is held. Many worshippers visit the temple every year on the day of the Ox. The water from the waterfall is so pure that it has been selected as one of the best 100 waters in Japan. Dishes such as “carp-no-arai” and “koikoku” made from carp that have been exposed to the water are well known as Ogi’s specialties. During the summer months, the area is visited by many people as a summer resort and is well known as one of Ogi’s hidden gems.
In 2020, a “wind chime shelf” was installed along the promenade. Visitors can walk to Kiyomizu Falls while being soothed by the cool sound of the wind chimes along with the murmuring of the stream. (Wind-bell shelves are installed from mid-July to the end of September.)

The alias “Jyunoren-no-taki” is named after the beautiful flow of the waterfall. The width of the waterfall is 13 meters and the drop is 75 meters, and the sight of water cascading vertically from the cliff is spectacular. The nearest temple is known as the sacred site of Taki Misogi, which is why there are many stone Buddhist statues around the waterfall.
In summer, the waterfall is surrounded by dark green trees, and in autumn, beautiful autumn leaves adorn the waterfall. Visitors can enjoy different scenery each season.
Along the approach to the waterfall, there are many restaurants that serve carp dishes, a specialty of Ogi. Carp from the famous water grown in the waterfall has no odor and is well known for its delicious taste. Many people visit to enjoy the taste of the clear water along with the waterfall.
